#neverstoplearning tip #3: check the numbers

S97A5508

Happy Monday!

In my recent interview with Marie Forleo, I shared the juicy numbers that explain why I launched OliveBox, a subscription box for paper lovers, in 2012. At our brick-and-mortar Pink Olive shops, overall business was up 43% at the time, but our stationery category had seen a staggering 70% increase. Though baby gifts had previously been our bread and butter, our customers were clearly craving pretty paper!

It seemed counter-intuitive to dig deeper into the stationery industry in our increasingly digital culture, but numbers don’t lie, so I trusted them. If I hadn’t taken a look at the data, OliveBox might never have become what it is today.

This week’s #neverstoplearning tip is to check the numbers. It’s so important to take a closer look at how your business is doing and to adjust your focus accordingly. You can’t change what you can’t see, and the data will guide you to go after the right growth opportunities.

Join us in the #neverstoplearning challenge and tell us on instagram: what interesting insights can you glean this week from reviewing your biz stats?

xoxo,
grace

P.S. If you’re looking to build your own business and craving a community of like-minded creatives that keep you accountable, I highly recommend checking out Marie Forleo’s B-School. Registration closes on Wednesday, March 2nd.

#neverstoplearning tip #2: create community

It’s just a fact of being human: we all crave community. Though it’s easy to understand how companionship comes into play in our social lives, it’s important to remember that support from others is important in our work lives, too. Even if you consider yourself a “solopreneur,” it’s not easy running a business — in fact, it can sometimes feel like a daunting challenge. Coming together with like-minded colleagues can provide inspiration and commiseration, ultimately decreasing overwhelm.

This week’s #neverstoplearning tip #2 is to create community. It’s a great way to share our skills with others and spread the love, while also gaining insight from the people who are two steps ahead of us in certain realms.

If you’re looking to build your own business and seeking a community of like-minded creatives, I highly recommend checking out Marie Forleo’s B-School. Many of my classmates from when I took the course — not to mention Marie herself — still remain my closest friends and confidants, whenever I seek support.

Join us on social media and show us how you’re taking this week’s #neverstoplearning challenge. How did you build your own community, and how has it supported your bold business goals?

xoxo,

#neverstoplearning tip #1: be a sponge

homepage

Happy Monday!

Now that my company is over eight years old, it might be easy to assume that I have the art of business ownership all figured out. I operate three successful brick-and-mortar boutiques in New York, in addition to a monthly subscription service for paper lovers.

Though I don’t hesitate to celebrate my moments of success, I firmly believe that there is always more room to grow. As entrepreneurs, each and every one of us is responsible for remaining constantly in “learning mode” in order to expand our skillsets and stay creative. In fact, whether you’re working for yourself or for a larger company, it’s always a good idea to maintain the mindset of an eager and excited student.

This week, we’re kicking off a new #neverstoplearning campaign to encourage you to keep pursuing your dreams on a consistent basis. With each blogpost, I’ll offer a fresh business tip with my perspective, and hope you’ll be able to integrate each idea in your daily work routine.

Tip #1 is at the heart of the #neverstoplearning mindset: be a sponge. Every new experience, exacting test, or tricky business decision offers something to be learned. Always keep an eye out for the hidden lessons, and soak in every little one. The lesson might not be pleasant — or it might even be that you’re entirely on the wrong path — but that still shows you something that you needed to know, allowing you to pivot in the proper direction.

This week, join us in our #neverstoplearning mission on social media (we’re @pinkolive on Instagram and Twitter) by showing us how you’re being a sponge. What hidden lessons are you soaking up, from experiences big or small?

xoxo,
grace
